Taxonomy: f. Plasmodidae
Animal: Plasmodium falciparum 2 03.jpg
Sites: Blood
Comment:
Plasmodium falciparum in thin film - note compact form in body of film. Multiple rings (2-8) in a red cell is common with falciparum, rare with malariae and only occasionally seen with vivax or ovale. It is unusual to see developing forms or schizonts of P. falciparum in the blood film except in very heavy infections as schizogony occurs in the capillaries of internal organs rather than in the circulating blood. Note that the rings are very small and delicate (1/6 the diameter of the red cell) with fine chromatin.
